Perfect for all ages, the event offers a hands-on workshop where you will use natural resources gathered straight from Hook Wood to create a beautiful, rustic Christmas decoration to take home.

Woodland Management and Traditional Craft Day

Join the Hook Wood community team for a hands-on woodland management and traditional craft day led by our expert Woodland Manager, Neill Scott.
This rewarding community event offers a unique opportunity to connect with nature, learn heritage skills, and actively contribute to the restoration of our local environment.
Under Neill’s expert guidance, participants will delve into the historic practice of sustainable forestry. You will get the chance to work directly with coppiced oak, learning the traditional method of cleaving (splitting wood along the grain) to shape durable, beautiful fence posts.Beyond woodcraft, volunteers will team up to breathe new life into the habitat by clearing stubborn brambles and planting the next generation of native trees, ensuring Hook Wood thrives for years to come. Whether you are looking to pick up a new heritage skill, get a great outdoor workout, or simply meet like-minded neighbours, this practical session promises fresh air, rewarding hard work, and a tangible impact on our local landscape.

Hook Wood is set to reveal its microscopic wonders during an upcoming community nature event led by renowned lichen ecologist Jon Hudson.
This special event invites local residents and nature enthusiasts to explore the woodland’s rich biodiversity through the lens of a specialist. Jon will share the exclusive, fresh findings from his recent comprehensive lichen survey of the wood, translating complex ecological data into fascinating insights about our local environment. Attendees will discover how these remarkable organisms act as critical indicators of woodland age and air quality. The event will feature an introductory talk followed by a guided walk through Hook Wood, offering a rare opportunity to learn field identification tips directly from an expert and uncover the secret, colourful communities growing right on our doorstep.
